A New Governance Chapter for AFAM

The African Association of Miyagi (AFAM), now officially incorporated as a General Incorporated Association of Japan, successfully held the First Meeting of its Board of Directors on Sunday, 21 June 2026. The meeting was conducted online via Zoom and marked an important step in strengthening AFAM’s governance, accountability, and long-term institutional development.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Isaac Yaw Asiedu, President and Representative Director, and facilitated by Dr. Ujuagu Akunna Francess, Secretary General. Directors and Auditors participated actively in the discussions, while members who were unable to attend submitted their apologies or participated by document.

Recognizing a Historic Milestone

The President welcomed members of the Board to the first meeting following AFAM’s legal incorporation on 11 June 2026. He described the occasion as a historic milestone in AFAM’s journey and expressed appreciation to all members, volunteers, advisers, and partners whose commitment made the incorporation possible.

The Board recognized that incorporation gives AFAM a stronger legal foundation, enhances credibility, improves organizational continuity, and opens new opportunities for partnerships, grants, sponsorships, and public engagement.

Updates on Current Activities

Board members received updates on AFAM’s ongoing programmes and achievements, including the continued development of AfriMag, educational and cultural outreach activities, community engagement, partnerships with local institutions, and the Association’s broader role in promoting Africa–Japan friendship across Miyagi and the Tohoku region.

The Board also reviewed AFAM’s financial situation, communication activities, membership development, and the need to strengthen long-term sustainability through fundraising, sponsorship, grants, and strategic partnerships.

Strategic Priorities for 2026–2027

A major part of the meeting focused on AFAM’s future direction. Directors discussed initiatives aimed at expanding AFAM’s impact as a trusted platform connecting African and Japanese communities, universities, businesses, local governments, embassies, and civil society organizations.

• Establishing AFAM Student Wings at universities across Tohoku
• Expanding Africa–Japan educational and cultural exchange programmes
• Strengthening partnerships with embassies, universities, governments, and businesses
• Developing fundraising and sponsorship strategies for long-term sustainability
• Enhancing AfriMag as a bilingual platform for African perspectives
• Promoting AFAM as a hub for Africa–Japan cooperation in Tohoku and beyond

Key Resolutions

The Board endorsed important resolutions to guide AFAM’s next phase of development. These included formal acknowledgment of AFAM’s successful incorporation, approval of strategic priorities for 2026–2027, support for the establishment and expansion of AFAM Student Wings, authorization to strengthen fundraising and partnership initiatives, and endorsement of preparations for operational and financial planning.

These resolutions provide a clear framework for AFAM’s continued growth as a professionally governed, credible, and sustainable organization serving Africa–Japan friendship and community development.

Looking Ahead

As AFAM begins this new chapter, the Association remains committed to promoting friendship, education, cultural exchange, youth leadership, community engagement, and practical cooperation between Africa and Japan. The Board reaffirmed its shared responsibility to support AFAM’s mission and expand its contribution to Miyagi, the wider Tohoku region, and beyond.
