A Historic Milestone for AFAM
The African Association of Miyagi (AFAM) is pleased to announce that it was officially incorporated as a General Incorporated Association of Japan on 11 June 2026.
This important step marks a new chapter in AFAM’s development and strengthens the Association’s capacity to serve the African community, promote multicultural coexistence, and deepen cooperation between Africa and Japan.
Since its establishment in 2002, AFAM has grown into a respected community platform in Miyagi and the wider Tohoku region. Through cultural events, educational outreach, public seminars, student engagement, publications, and community partnerships, AFAM has worked to build bridges of friendship and understanding between African and Japanese communities.
Strengthening Governance and Public Trust
Incorporation provides AFAM with a stronger legal and organizational foundation. It enhances the Association’s ability to build partnerships with local governments, universities, embassies, corporations, international organizations, and civil society groups.
As a legally recognized organization, AFAM is better positioned to improve transparency, accountability, institutional continuity, fundraising capacity, and long-term sustainability.

AFAM will continue working to expand its role as a bridge between Africa and Japan. The Association’s next phase will focus on education, cultural exchange, youth leadership, research collaboration, business networking, and community development.
