Our Story

The journey of AFAM: from a shared vision to a lasting community platform

AFAM was founded to bring Africans and the wider Japanese community into closer human, cultural, and educational connection. Over the years, that vision has grown into a respected platform for dialogue, representation, partnership, and Africa–Japan friendship.

How It Started

The African Association of Miyagi was established in 2002 by Africans living in Miyagi who believed that cultural understanding, community support, and organized engagement were essential for stronger Africa–Japan relations.

Pioneers of AFAM

Pioneers of AFAM — an early generation of members whose vision, commitment, and community spirit helped lay the foundation for the African Association of Miyagi.

A Beginning Rooted in Purpose

AFAM was founded to promote social interaction, mutual respect, and deeper understanding between Africans living in Miyagi Prefecture and the broader Japanese community.

From the beginning, the association was not only meant to be a gathering point for Africans. It was also envisioned as a bridge — one that would support friendship, educational exchange, cultural representation, and meaningful participation in local society.

This vision gave AFAM a character that was both communal and outward-looking: a home for Africans and a trusted point of connection for institutions, schools, local communities, and friends of Africa.
